A case for learning other languages

I read with interest an article headed "Language lessons" in the local press and fully agree that it is regrettable that educators do not consider language studies to be important. The vast majority of words in English (70 percent or more) come from Latin, Greek, French and many other languages such as Italian, Japanese and Arabic. I studied French and German at Dundee College, Italian and Gaelic at extra-mural evening classes at Dundee University and many others from books and also from the Internet. There are many websites dedicated to languages, such as Livemocha (which offers courses on over thirty languages and which I would recommend to anyone who is keen to learn other languages), Omniglot, Travlang, Google Translate and Geonames, as well as the thousands of Wikipedia articles in over two hundred languages, but it would be ideal if complete courses on all languages were available on the Internet and if all Wikipedia articles were available in all languages. If you want to learn other languages, don't depend on the educators - teach yourself by using these websites. I use these websites myself all the time and am currently learning Polish, and hope to learn many other languages, from the Livemocha website.
